New glasses to allow people suffering from daltonism to see more colors !

Hi curious people ! This is Curiosity Day 51

Congratulations to Enchroma, which, as you can see on their website, have developped glasses for people suffering from certain types of daltonism.





These new glasses have been found (by chance..., see the article) to allow people suffering from daltonism to better disentangle close wavelengths.

Daltonism gathers several color-perception disorders, and these glasses only help for certain types. 

The principe remains quite simple: the person suffering from daltonism wears glasses that here allow to accentuate the color clarity and saturations.

So big up for this step in helping them !

Guillaume le Gentil , the kind scientist who really wanted to see an eclipse

Today, we will be moking a bit, but seeing how strong the final message, i think that even Guillaume le Gentil (who we are moking) wouldn't even mind himself.

The story of Guillaume le Gentil really starts when he decides, for scientific purposes, to go travel to Pondichery (French colony in India) to observe the transit of Venus in front of the Sun. The goal of Guillaume le Gentil was to do precise measurements and help evaluate the Sun-Earth distance.

Guillaume le Gentil starts his travel to get ready to observe this venusian transit in June 1761. In March, Guillaume le Gentil leaves Mauritius but ... India just fell into a french-england war, and Guillaume le Gentil has to travel back to Mauritius.

Surprised and in a hurry, Guillaume le Gentil has to try in the rush to do precise astronomic measurements, ... from his boat, which is a complete fail of course !

Frustrated by this fail, Guillaume le Gentil decides to stay and observe again the same phenomenon 8 years later. Pondichéry is back in peace, and he arrives in 1768, 2 months earlier than the observation to be made.
Guillaume le Gentil sets up a new observation site, and tests it perfectly before the phenomenon...except that the weather is terrible the day of the venusian transit in front of the sun, and he can't see anything behind the fog...

Guillaume le Gentil coming back in France is not any more glorious: sick, he has to delay his return, and the next boat is taken into a storm. He finally manages to reach France 11 years after his departure, only to discover that none of his news arrived. People think that Guillaume le Gentil is dead, and his wife is re-married, he lost is job and his family is sharing his possessions.

BUT ! Guillaume le Gentil really wanted to be part of the scientific improvement, and for so many people who dedicate their life to science and research, let's be conscious that only a few get the chance to be known and praised for what they achieve !

Pollution day in europe, first days of Spring, when everybody is packing up along the roads to the same hiking areas, perfect day to talk about the science behind traffic jams ! 

Did you know that traffic jams and queueing had their own science and studies ? 

Since 1993, researchers have studied and published results about what could cause and suppress traffic jams :
- Traffic controls
- New break techniques
- speed limits

Often, the same conclusion was reached : everything that allows for a more constant speed on the road allows for less traffic jams. On the contrary, (abrupt) changes of speed create traffic jams, but often behind the "responsible" car, which will not even know about the traffic jam it just created !

For the moment, the player was presented in HTML5 language, but it should be soon adapted into Flash. The player is apparently praised to be faster and lighter than its predecessor.

Dailymotion is historically French (Orange group) but is quickly developping through Europe and might have a quick boost, since intense rumors call for a massive investment from HK (250M$) to invade the asian market.

I know that watching some sports on TV helps to develop some clichés about sportsman not necessarily being the most brilliant people, but now, think twice before saying it, since it has just been sentifically proven that sport helps the development of the brain !

The study which showed that is quite simple: they compared the brain development of twins, who initially shared the same genes and environmental conditions, and it has been proven that the one doing more sport is better at developping its brain power !

A video game to cure children

Ambyopie is a quite frequent affection on children eyes (3% of all the kids in the World). The problem in this case is that of both eyes, one is "lazy" and looses part or all of its acuity, while the other eye is doing all the job and gets tired quite frequently.

This affection is often treated, but it can come back during the adult age.

Ubisoft (the french video-game maker company, which also designed Assassins's Creed) has collaborated to develop a video game specially targetting this disease and help cure it !

Scholar situation in France...

In France, the educational system has always tried to gather the majority of the students in the main branch of the educational pathway, and avoid sending the ids to "professionalization" schools (where they drop the academic style and learn more about a technical job, like cooking schools, etc.). At 18, students take an exam ("baccalauréat") and currently, more than 80% of a generation passes it (20% of the people passed it in 1970)

After a severe drop in the French educational system efficiency, the state is thinking about changing the rules, and try to adapt the teaching closer around the students: some students would receive fewer but more adapted lectures.

I have a doubt on how to do that with the same number of teachers and assistants...

Magic Leap is implying that its competitors are designing glasses that could cause brain damages.

This accusation is way more serious than the previous attacks for "sea sickness troubles" which could be due to the technique: superimposing 2 separate images was thought to cause at least tiredness and motion sickness.
