Teaching code skills to your little kids... A necessity ?

58th curiosity tip to wake up your brain !

I have no idea if we should consider this article as helpful or scary in terms of kids education ...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeana-lee-tahnk/neat-products-for-teachin_b_7138030.html

This article by the HuffingtonPost deals with "how to teach coding to your kids".

They especially present "cool toys to learn coding starting at 3 year old"

The good size of this "educational" program is that it also shows how girls should feel engaged in this process, and, more generally, how to improve the logical analysis and thinking spirit.

Good share, good day,

Hi, curious people ! 57th (already!) day of curiosity for the blog !

Today, I want to share this inspiring talk by Eduardo Saenz de Carbzon. In this TED Talk, Eduardo Saenz de Cabezon shows how unlucky we are that all mathematicians are not like him !

The art of appreciating maths is real, and he knows how to share this feeling !

Earth Day 2015 !

57th curiosity day today !
Today, 22nd of April 2015, we celebrate the "Earth Day". Even if that should be a perpetual thought, it's always a good thing to have some exterior pressure to do something great for our environment today.

Over here, it will be some gardening !

And don't forget all the good things this special day brought since 1970: :
- EPA creation (environment protection agency)
- "Clean Air" law approval
- "Clean Water" law approval
- "endangered species" law approval
- first sensibilisations to recycling
etc, etc, ...

And you, anything planned ?

Lack of organs: worse and worse ... donate !

56th day of curiosity and e-learning !

Good thing, bad thing, up to you to react  !

In France, a big debate is surfacing, since it "just" took 39 years for people to realize that organ donations were actually considered as "a priori volunteered" for everyone who dies. (It's just not applied)

To go past the political side of the current debate, here is a well-made infography about the stat of organ donations in france http://www.dondorganes.fr/002-la-penurie-d-organes:
- in 22 years, organ donations increased by 45% (large spectrum of allowed donators explains this). Therefore, logically, an increase in surgery operations
- However, unfortunately, one number erases this good news : 8800 people were waiting for an organ donation in 1993, and now it's over 18 000 !

The lack of organ donations is a real thing here in France !
Illustration du graphique sur l'évolution de la Liste d'attente entre 2005 et 2013

So what is the situation in your country ? How easy is it to declare yourself as a volunteer donator ?

Numeric tools in school: losing memory ability ?

D55 on this curiosity blog!

Today, I saw again another article talking how much we should increase the rythm of numerization in the school environment. …

I must admit that I'm not 100% convinced by this position.
To be honest :
- I'm sure that there are very good ways to use the internet and a computer to provide tools adapted to school, education and learning.
- especially, recording lectures, allowing them to be shared in many languages, heard, and repeatable IS A GOOD THING
- BUT our memory can be affected by the method chosen: handwritten sentences might be easier to process for our brain, compared with computer screens.

AND THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT UNTIL THIS STUDY!

A very serious manuscript in which the students were reaching the highest scores when typing their notes, especially during a lecture context !
And you, how do you teach / learn in lectures ?

How computers (can't) deal with RGB !

54th Day of curiosity and lifetime for this page :)

Today, I'll share such a GREAT video by minutePhysics. This guy is just awesome in simplifying maths and physics, and I keep being impressed about how cool the subject becomes !

So, for a 4'-long interesting story about the tricks (and errors) about how your computer is producing the colors, just follow this link !

Crowdsourcing in science : Save the World (or nearly do it)

53rd day for the curious people !

Today, I propose that we talk about crowdsourcing in science, or "how the crowd can work massively to reach a goal". This notion developped recently fast in advertisement and publicity-making.

However, the "citizens doing science" notion appeared few years ago and has so far been a big success for several projects.
No need to be an expert in most of the cases : human beings are just naturally so good to recognize patterns and written sentences, what computers are not. And also, crowdsourcing opens a broad opportunity for worldwide gathering of information, which is not available with normal study laboratories fundings.

**** information collecting ****
Numerous blogs are already existing where people exchange about the animal species they observed during their last hikes. There is a crowdsourcing projects based on this big success around nature observation:
-  http://www.ispotnature.org/communities/global : Did you spot a fish, a bird, an insect in the back of your garden or during a recent trip around the World ? Then just take a picture of it and share it on ispotnature, and someone will give you an identification of what you spotted !

**** Recognition ****
The human brain is way above any computer in terms of shape, pattern and writing recognition. Several projects are using our natural high abilities in the domain to help science !
- http://www.galaxyzoo.org/  : a website where astronomers (beginners to confirmed) are invited to observe space pictures and sort spatial objects by shape/class and categorie (age, ...): the best helpers will even been given pictures with unidentified galaxies, that they will be the first to discover on Earth ! !

You surely did encounter these distorted numbers and letters when trying to connect at your favourite website. Just learn know that Google has been developping recaptcha with a precise idea in the back of their mind : you actually (willingly or not) helped Google to digitize all the e-books of google that couldn't be read or translated directly via the computer force !

**** Donation of time ! ****
Yes, we are talking about calculation time donation. As your computer is never using 100% of its capacity, you can actually donate the non-used power of your computer when it's switched on so that a lab or a project calculates with it. Several domains are using a lot of calculation power and need these donations (Bio-Medical studies, Climate, ...). The results of these calculations are always publicly displayed for the scientific comunity. .

If you want to participate, here is a list (non-exhaustive) of projects which can use your help and lending them a bit of your computer power that you don't use anyway: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_distributed_computing_projects

**** Conclusion ****
Crowdourcing in science showed its success in 2010 when more than 200k people partcipated to the "World Water Monitoring Day" and gave information of their neighbour rivers.

There is a big chance that with the development of the social networks, the science crowdsourcing has a bright future in front of itself.

Good share, good day !

New glasses to allow people suffering from daltonism to see more colors !

Hi curious people ! This is Curiosity Day 51

Congratulations to Enchroma, which, as you can see on their website, have developped glasses for people suffering from certain types of daltonism.
Le daltonisme, qui est héréditaire, touche principalement les hommes. © Valspar

These new glasses have been found (by chance..., see the article) to allow people suffering from daltonism to better disentangle close wavelengths.

Daltonism gathers several color-perception disorders, and these glasses only help for certain types.

The principe remains quite simple: the person suffering from daltonism wears glasses that here allow to accentuate the color clarity and saturations.

So big up for this step in helping them !

The International Space Station during the solar Eclipse !

D50 for the curious people !

Seen on the page of a colleague blogger : a superb photo of the solar eclipse, but largely prepared... since it captured the transit of the International Space Station (ISS) in front of the sun !
http://astrospace-page.blogspot.fr/2015/03/ISS-transit-eclipse-2015.html

The photographer, Thierry Legault (his flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/thierry_legault/ ), has already made some of these shots before, but not nearly as spectacular: this 6-second long ISS transit in front of the sun is just stunning !

You can congrat him for this shot of course and like his work !

Keep curious you all !

Guillaume le Gentil , the kind scientist who really wanted to see an eclipse

D49 for the curious people !

Today, we will be moking a bit, but seeing how strong the final message, i think that even Guillaume le Gentil (who we are moking) wouldn't even mind himself.

The story of Guillaume le Gentil really starts when he decides, for scientific purposes, to go travel to Pondichery (French colony in India) to observe the transit of Venus in front of the Sun. The goal of Guillaume le Gentil was to do precise measurements and help evaluate the Sun-Earth distance.

Guillaume le Gentil starts his travel to get ready to observe this venusian transit in June 1761. In March, Guillaume le Gentil leaves Mauritius but ... India just fell into a french-england war, and Guillaume le Gentil has to travel back to Mauritius.

Surprised and in a hurry, Guillaume le Gentil has to try in the rush to do precise astronomic measurements, ... from his boat, which is a complete fail of course !

Frustrated by this fail, Guillaume le Gentil decides to stay and observe again the same phenomenon 8 years later. Pondichéry is back in peace, and he arrives in 1768, 2 months earlier than the observation to be made.
Guillaume le Gentil sets up a new observation site, and tests it perfectly before the phenomenon...except that the weather is terrible the day of the venusian transit in front of the sun, and he can't see anything behind the fog...

Guillaume le Gentil coming back in France is not any more glorious: sick, he has to delay his return, and the next boat is taken into a storm. He finally manages to reach France 11 years after his departure, only to discover that none of his news arrived. People think that Guillaume le Gentil is dead, and his wife is re-married, he lost is job and his family is sharing his possessions.

BUT ! Guillaume le Gentil really wanted to be part of the scientific improvement, and for so many people who dedicate their life to science and research, let's be conscious that only a few get the chance to be known and praised for what they achieve !

If you liked the story of Guillaume le Gentil, don't forget that 1 share = 1 happy koala, thanks for the tribune you can give to my works and articles !

Traffic jams have their own science !

D48 for the curious people !
Pollution day in europe, first days of Spring, when everybody is packing up along the roads to the same hiking areas, perfect day to talk about the science behind traffic jams !
Did you know that traffic jams and queueing had their own science and studies ?
Since 1993, researchers have studied and published results about what could cause and suppress traffic jams :
- Traffic controls
- New break techniques
- speed limits
Often, the same conclusion was reached : everything that allows for a more constant speed on the road allows for less traffic jams. On the contrary, (abrupt) changes of speed create traffic jams, but often behind the "responsible" car, which will not even know about the traffic jam it just created !
A summary of 20 years of traffic jam research ? Follow this link !
[Four figures in time sequence: the wreck is cleared,
and a 'wave' of spaces moves backwards as cars begin
to leave, yet more cars stack up behind. A 'wave' of
stopped cars moves backwards along the highway.
The cars are unmoving, yet the wave itself moves.]

Scientists participating to global warming ?

D47, hi curious people !

Today, a bit of a provocation !

Do scientists that warn us about global warming need to ... stop doing conferences all around the World ?

Should scientist working on climate change think about reducing their carbon footprint ?

How to make science advance and fructify in the global warming debate, without having such a strong impact on the nature that we are supposed to protect ?

Nature just published an article on this !

the future of agriculture

D46, hello, curious people !

Today, just a reminder to have a good grip on numbers: the agriculture represents 1/3 of the global greenhouse gases emissions. We can't discuss changes to be done without including this big part of the debate.

However, changing the agricultural methods goes along with a combined challenge:
- which plants to grow in a changing climate ?
- which plants to grow to feed soon 9 billion people ?

Improvement for Dailymotion platform

D45, A new open beta version of the Dailymotion player is available!

For the moment, the player was presented in HTML5 language, but it should be soon adapted into Flash. The player is apparently praised to be faster and lighter than its predecessor.

To test the free beta version of this new Dailymotion player, you just have to register here
http://www.dailymotion.com/player

Dailymotion is historically French (Orange group) but is quickly developping through Europe and might have a quick boost, since intense rumors call for a massive investment from HK (250M$) to invade the asian market.

It's also good to remind you that Dailymotion is paying the advertisement wayyyyy better than the concurrents (even overpaying), so it can only be a good news if Dailymotion closes a bit the technical gap that separates it from its concurrents.

All in all, good news for video-makers, streamers, and viewers who want to support them !

Peter principle

D44, hello curious people !

Did you know anything about Peter principle ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Principle

According to this principle, "employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively".

This can definitely sound like a joke, but it has been the base for many studies and scientific / statistic research, which have proven the principle to be true, at least partially !

PS: Thanks who ? Thanks Wiki !

Sport = brain development ?

D43, hello curious people !

Sport = brain development !

I know that watching some sports on TV helps to develop some clichés about sportsman not necessarily being the most brilliant people, but now, think twice before saying it, since it has just been sentifically proven that sport helps the development of the brain !

The study which showed that is quite simple: they compared the brain development of twins, who initially shared the same genes and environmental conditions, and it has been proven that the one doing more sport is better at developping its brain power !

A video game to cure children

D41, hi curious people !
Ambyopie is a quite frequent affection on children eyes (3% of all the kids in the World). The problem in this case is that of both eyes, one is "lazy" and looses part or all of its acuity, while the other eye is doing all the job and gets tired quite frequently.

This affection is often treated, but it can come back during the adult age.
Ubisoft (the french video-game maker company, which also designed Assassins's Creed) has collaborated to develop a video game specially targetting this disease and help cure it !

Scholar situation in France...

D40, hello curious people !

In France, the educational system has always tried to gather the majority of the students in the main branch of the educational pathway, and avoid sending the ids to "professionalization" schools (where they drop the academic style and learn more about a technical job, like cooking schools, etc.). At 18, students take an exam ("baccalauréat") and currently, more than 80% of a generation passes it (20% of the people passed it in 1970)

After a severe drop in the French educational system efficiency, the state is thinking about changing the rules, and try to adapt the teaching closer around the students: some students would receive fewer but more adapted lectures.

I have a doubt on how to do that with the same number of teachers and assistants...

Which solutions exist in your own countries to deal with "slow" students ?

A new plant to fix carbon ? really ?

38th day of curiosity!

Here is an interesting news, with possible debate:

Will the technology serve for an easier underground storage of the carbon, or for re-use of the modified products?

oculus rift and virtual 3D glasses

D36 for the curious people !

Some news (and competition) among the "virtual reality" business:
Magic Leap is implying that its competitors are designing glasses that could cause brain damages.

This accusation is way more serious than the previous attacks for "sea sickness troubles" which could be due to the technique: superimposing 2 separate images was thought to cause at least tiredness and motion sickness.

In this ITW, the CEO from Magic Leap says that, on the contrary, their technique respects the "human biology of the eye" to render a 3D virtual image... Way to go, eager to see

Some of you might know that comets are like big dirty ice balls travelling in space. When approaching the sun, the water evaporates, and leaves a tail behind the comet.

D5: Insects' hotels ? Whaaat ?

D-5: Hello, curious people !

Most of you know how to build a nest for birds. However, when it comes to insects, very few people understand the interest of attracting them.

However, most of the insects can be useful in your gardens.

Today, I propose a link towards an article explaining how to organize an "insects' hotel", to attract and organize useful insects around your house !
Next family time fun ?

Light pollution - SciShow presentation

D4 - Hello, Curious people !
Today, I wanted to talk about the light pollution.

Not only is this pollution a real pain for astronomy and astrophotographers, but also it might impact animal and ...human beings behaviour.

What can be light pollution consequences and what is done to solve it ? Check out the nice job on the subject by Hank, the director of the "Scishow" youtube channel, that I warmly recommand

D2: the snowball Earth !

Hello Curious People !!
Today, I'll point you to a story that only few people know !

Did you know that at some point, life nearly went extinct on Earth ? Of course you'll say "yeah, yeah, we know, all that dinosaurs stuff, with the comet and volcanos and fire and..." -"Well, no, I'm talking about the day when the Earth nearly went completely frozen !"

Enjoy our currently warm Winterish time

You can find lots more about this: Thanks who  ?  Thanks wiki !

Why do we sleep anyway ?

The "simplest" questions are ofthen the hardest to answer to. Those who have kids must see what I'm talking about

That's maybe why, even if the Human beings are sleeping for 25 years in average during their life we.... still don't know why!

Some more details in here !
